Long-legged mite

Scutacarus longitarsus is a microscopic mite belonging to the order Trombidiformes and the family Scutacaridae. It is a well-known pest in commercial mushroom production, often referred to simply as a mushroom mite. These organisms are highly specialized, thriving in the controlled environments typical of commercial fungal farming.

The primary hosts for these mites include various cultivated mushroom species such as Agaricus bisporus (button mushrooms) and Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushrooms). They feed directly on the fungal mycelium, destroying the vegetative structure responsible for nutrient absorption. This feeding activity disrupts the metabolic processes of the fungi, leading to significantly lower yields.

The life cycle of Scutacarus longitarsus is optimized for rapid population growth, especially in conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures. The mites undergo several developmental stages, including egg, larva, and adult. They are extremely resilient and can survive in the substrates even when conditions are suboptimal, which complicates eradication efforts in specialized facilities.

Visual signs of infestation include the wilting and discoloration of the mycelium. In advanced stages, the mushroom fruit bodies become deformed, soft, and unmarketable. Furthermore, these mites serve as vectors for various bacterial and mold pathogens, exacerbating the damage to the crop by introducing secondary infections that can rapidly spread throughout the production room.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Key strategies include:

• Strict pasteurization protocols for all substrate materials to eliminate existing mite populations.
• Implementation of sanitation measures, including footbaths and equipment sterilization.
• Using air filtration systems to prevent the accidental introduction of mites into growing rooms.
• Regular inspection of substrate samples using stereomicroscopy for early detection.
