Scutellista blue wasp
Scutellista caerulea
Description
Systematic position: Scutellista caerulea belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Pteromalidae. Although often listed in entomological databases regarding agricultural pests, it is strictly an entomophagous insect, specifically a parasitoid, rather than a direct consumer of plant tissue.
Biology and lifecycle: This species is a small metallic-blue wasp. Its lifecycle is obligately linked to soft scales (Coccidae). The female wasp inserts its eggs beneath the scale of the host. The larvae feed on the eggs produced by the scale insect, effectively destroying the population from within.
Host associations: The wasp is typically found in environments where soft scales, such as the black olive scale (Saissetia oleae), are present. It primarily targets plants including citrus, olives, fig trees, and various ornamental species that are susceptible to scale infestations.
Economic significance: Scutellista caerulea is highly valued in agriculture as a biological control agent. It provides natural suppression of harmful scale insects, which produce honeydew and promote the growth of sooty mold, ultimately leading to significant crop damage and quality reduction.
Control measures: As a beneficial insect, Scutellista caerulea should be protected rather than controlled. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices should prioritize the avoidance of broad-spectrum pesticides that disrupt the lifecycle of these parasitoids, allowing them to effectively manage scale populations naturally.
