House centipede

The house centipede (Scutigera coleoptrata) belongs to the Scutigeridae family and is frequently encountered in horticultural environments such as greenhouses, nurseries, and storage areas. While primarily carnivorous, feeding on various small arthropods, it can occasionally behave as a nuisance or secondary pest when conditions permit.

The biological development of this species is highly dependent on humidity levels. Their lifecycle involves multiple instars (molting stages), during which they develop their characteristic long legs and rapid movement patterns. They thrive in damp, dark environments, making greenhouse benches and potting soil storage areas ideal habitats for their colonization.

Though they are beneficial predators of aphids and mites, their harmful impact occurs when they feed on delicate plant tissues. In intensive agricultural systems, they may cause mechanical damage to seedlings or tender roots, which facilitates the entry of pathogenic fungi and bacteria. This opportunistic feeding behavior is often exacerbated when natural prey populations are scarce.

Damage symptoms often include small, irregular lesions on the base of stems or young leaves. Because Scutigera coleoptrata is primarily nocturnal, cultivators often fail to notice the centipedes until significant population levels are reached. Their presence usually indicates an underlying issue with moisture management or structural hygiene within the growing facility.

Effective management focuses on creating unfavorable conditions for the pest. Improving ventilation to reduce soil and ambient humidity, maintaining rigorous sanitation practices, and removing debris or standing water are essential. By keeping the environment dry and clean, the habitat becomes unsuitable for the house centipede, effectively preventing infestation without relying solely on chemical pesticides.
