Garden symphylan

The Garden symphylan (Scutigerella immaculata) is a member of the class Symphyla. Often referred to as "garden centipedes," these small, translucent, white soil-dwelling arthropods possess 12 pairs of legs in their adult stage. They are highly mobile and move through the pore spaces in the soil to avoid unfavorable environmental conditions, making them a challenging pest to manage.

These pests affect a wide array of crops, showing a preference for high-moisture and organic-rich environments. Common hosts include vegetable crops like lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and various ornamental plants. They are particularly destructive in greenhouse production systems, where consistent soil moisture and temperature provide ideal conditions for their survival and reproduction.

The biological cycle of the garden symphylan is complex, characterized by ongoing molting throughout their lifespan, which can last several years. Females deposit eggs in clusters within deep soil cracks. Unlike many insects, symphylans continue to add body segments and legs after each molt, allowing them to remain active in the soil profile at varying depths depending on soil moisture levels.

Damage is caused by the feeding activities of both nymphs and adults on the root hairs and small root tips of plants. This feeding prevents the plant from absorbing necessary nutrients and water, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and, in severe infestations, total crop failure. Furthermore, the root lesions created by feeding provide entry points for soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary infections.

Effective management strategies include the following:

• Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the pest's life cycle.
• Optimizing soil management through frequent cultivation to dry out the topsoil and disturb symphylan populations.
• Maintaining proper irrigation practices to avoid excessive soil moisture.
• Using soil-applied insecticides or biological control agents, such as predatory mites, when populations exceed threshold levels.
• Utilizing steam sterilization in greenhouse soils to eradicate soil-dwelling stages of the pest.
