Description
Scypha compressa is a species of insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This species is a specialized pest found primarily in temperate regions, where it maintains a cryptic lifestyle within dense vegetation and grass cover.
The primary crops vulnerable to attacks by this pest are cereals. Significant economic damage is caused to wheat, barley, rye, and oat crops, as well as several wild perennial grasses which act as reservoirs for the pest population during the off-season.
The life cycle of the insect consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Overwintering typically occurs in the egg stage, with eggs deposited within the plant tissues of host plants. In the spring, nymphs hatch and begin feeding on plant sap, undergoing several molts until they reach sexual maturity.
The pest damages plants by piercing the epidermis of leaves and stems with its piercing-sucking mouthparts. As a result of Scypha compressa feeding, chlorotic spots, leaf curling, and deformation occur, which disrupt photosynthesis and significantly reduce the overall productivity of the crop.
