Description
The agave snout weevil (Scyphophorus acupunctatus) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a highly destructive pest known for infesting various succulent species, most notably agaves, causing severe economic damage in regions where these plants are cultivated commercially.
The pest primarily affects plants of the genus Agave, including Agave tequilana. It is often found in both arid environments and greenhouse settings. Its ability to infest healthy tissue and introduce secondary pathogens makes it a significant threat to sustainable agave farming.
The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult weevil typically feeds on the exterior tissues of the plant, while the female deposits eggs into the leaf bases or the crown. The larvae then burrow deep into the interior, feeding on the fleshy stem and heart tissues.
Damage symptoms include the wilting of the central leaves, which often turn yellow and collapse. Because the larvae remain hidden inside the plant, infestations are frequently detected only when the plant is already severely compromised. Rotting at the base is a common secondary symptom caused by bacterial infection following larval feeding.
