Selenaria is a genus of bryozoans that, in specific agricultural scenarios, can act as an unconventional pest. While primarily marine organisms, their introduction into greenhouses through unfiltered irrigation water can lead to the colonization of plant roots, particularly in hydroponic systems and soil-less cultivation.

The organism belongs to the phylum Bryozoa and the family Selenariidae. As colonial organisms, they form calcified or chitinous structures that adhere to surfaces. When these colonies establish themselves on the root zone of a plant, they physically obstruct the root hairs and reduce the efficiency of water and nutrient uptake.

The primary crops affected are those grown in hydroponics or using open-source water systems with high salt content. The presence of Selenaria causes the root system to become encased, leading to stunted growth, nutrient deficiencies, and increased susceptibility to secondary pathogenic infections.

The life cycle involves a motile larval stage that searches for a substrate. Once attached, the organism transitions to a stationary colonial phase, reproducing by budding. This growth is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically the mineral content and temperature of the water, which allows them to thrive in nutrient-rich fertigation fluids.

Managing this pest requires proactive water treatment strategies to prevent the introduction of larvae into the production system:

  • Implementation of high-efficiency filtration systems (micron-rated filters).
  • UV sterilization of irrigation water to neutralize larval stages.
  • Regular inspection of root health in hydroponic and aquaponic setups.
  • Routine cleaning of irrigation tanks and pipes to prevent colony buildup.
