While it is naturally occurring in intertidal zones, it is categorized as a pest in agricultural and aquaculture contexts due to its role as a prolific biofouling agent that compromises underwater infrastructure.

This organism impacts water intake systems, irrigation pumps, and aquaculture cages. By attaching to surfaces in large, dense colonies, these barnacles physically obstruct water flow, which is critical for agricultural irrigation and the maintenance of artificial environments in commercial fish or seaweed farming.

The life cycle begins as planktonic larvae, which eventually settle on suitable hard surfaces. Upon attachment, the organisms undergo a metamorphosis, developing a protective, permanent calcified shell. This structural transformation makes them extremely difficult to remove once established, necessitating preemptive rather than reactive strategies.
