Servaisia

Servaisia is a genus of insects belonging to the order Diptera and the family Sarcophagidae, commonly known as flesh flies. While many members of this family are saprophagous, species within the genus Servaisia can exhibit behaviors that bring them into conflict with agricultural interests, particularly when they infest plant tissues under stress or secondary to other primary pests.

The host range for this pest includes various vegetable and field crops. The larvae are opportunistic feeders, often targeting fruits, stems, or roots that have already suffered mechanical damage or environmental stress. By feeding on the internal tissues, they accelerate decay and create entry points for opportunistic plant pathogens, significantly compromising the health of the plant.

The biology of Servaisia follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult. The lifecycle is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with warm and humid weather promoting faster development. Adults are mobile and typically deposit eggs near decaying organic matter or compromised plant tissue, which serves as an immediate food source for the hatching larvae.

The damage caused by Servaisia is often characterized by internal tissue breakdown, larval tunneling, and the release of fluids that attract further bacterial infections. This leads to substantial yield losses and a reduction in crop quality, making the harvested produce unsuitable for market. Economic impact is highest when infestation coincides with the ripening stage of the crops.
