Description

Systematic position: The African pink stem borer (Sesamia calamistis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a significant agricultural pest, particularly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, known for causing major yield losses in cereal crops.

Host plants: This pest is a major threat to a wide range of monocots. Its primary hosts include maize, sorghum, and pearl millet. It also attacks rice and sugarcane, while various wild grasses act as alternative hosts that maintain pest populations throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adult females lay eggs in clusters beneath the leaf sheaths of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the stems. The duration of the life cycle is highly temperature-dependent, usually ranging from 30 to 50 days, which facilitates multiple generations per growing season.

Damage and economic importance: Larval feeding within the stem destroys the plant's vascular tissue. This results in the classic symptom of 'dead heart,' where the central leaf wilts and dies. Heavy infestations cause stunted growth, stem lodging, and severe grain quality reduction due to secondary fungal infections entering through the borer's entry and exit holes.

  • Cultural practices such as removing crop residues and stalks immediately after harvest to destroy diapausing larvae.
