Systematic position: The Mediterranean corn stalk borer (Sesamia cretica) is a member of the order Lepidoptera, family Noctuidae. It is a highly significant pest known for its destructive impact on cereal crops, particularly in Mediterranean climates and surrounding regions.
Crops affected: This insect primarily attacks maize (corn), sorghum, and broomcorn. Occasionally, it may infest other graminaceous crops or wild grasses, which can serve as alternative hosts during the early or late stages of the growing season when preferred crops are not available.
Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are nocturnal and lay eggs beneath the leaf sheaths. Larvae develop through several instars, with the mature larvae usually pupating inside the stalks of the host plant. The number of generations per year varies based on regional temperature and humidity levels.
