Description
The pink stem borer (Sesamia inferens) is a destructive lepidopteran pest belonging to the Noctuidae family. It is recognized as a major pest of various cereal crops, particularly in Asian agricultural systems, where it poses a significant threat to food security and farm profitability.
This pest is a notable polyphagous insect, meaning it feeds on a wide range of hosts. While rice is the most commonly attacked crop, the larvae also infest corn, wheat, barley, sorghum, and various wild grasses, making it difficult to control through host-plant exclusion alone.
The biological development of Sesamia inferens typically proceeds through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Eggs are usually laid under the leaf sheaths of host plants. The larvae, which are the damaging stage, bore directly into the stems to feed, creating tunnels that disrupt the plant's vascular system.
Damage symptoms include "deadheart" formation, where the central leaf withers and dies, and the appearance of "whiteheads" at the panicle stage, which contain no grain. This feeding behavior causes significant physiological stress to the crop, leading to stunted growth, lodging, and reduced yield quantity and quality.
