Golubac fly

Simulium columbaschense

Description

Systematic position: The Golubac fly (Simulium columbaschense) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Simuliidae. Known as a notorious blood-sucking pest, this species is infamous for its aggressive swarming behavior in various regions of Europe.

Host species: While this pest does not target plants or crops, it is a significant nuisance to livestock. It primarily attacks cattle, sheep, horses, and poultry, often leading to severe economic losses for farmers due to animal health deterioration.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is strictly tied to running water habitats. Females lay eggs on submerged objects or vegetation. Larvae develop in oxygen-rich streams, feeding by filtering organic matter, before pupating and emerging as adult flies that can travel long distances to find a blood meal.

Nature of damage: The damage is caused by the fly's bite, which releases toxic saliva into the host's body. This causes local inflammation and, in severe cases, systemic toxemia. Animals under heavy attack suffer from extreme stress, loss of appetite, anemia, and, if left untreated, can die from respiratory obstruction or anaphylactic shock.

  • Application of insecticidal pour-on treatments for livestock.
  • Restricting grazing during peak activity hours, usually dawn and dusk.
  • Using protective housing and smoke or fans to deter fly swarms.
  • Monitoring local water sources to identify and treat larval breeding sites.
  • Consulting veterinary services for appropriate systemic repellent protocols.
