Simulium vittatum, commonly known as a type of black fly, belongs to the family Simuliidae (order Diptera). In the context of agriculture, it is classified as a significant pest that directly affects the health and production efficiency of livestock and poultry through its persistent blood-feeding behavior.

While this insect does not feed on crops directly, it is considered a major economic pest in pastoral agriculture. The primary impact is the significant stress caused to grazing animals, which results in reduced weight gain, lower milk yields, and potential secondary infections due to constant skin irritation from numerous bites.

The life cycle of this species is strictly aquatic. Females lay eggs on submerged vegetation or rocks in running water. The larval stages are filter feeders that thrive in oxygenated, flowing streams. Understanding the timing of emergence is crucial for farmers, as the population peak is highly correlated with seasonal changes in water temperature and flow rates.

The damage caused is twofold: direct physiological harm through toxic saliva introduced during biting, and indirect economic harm due to disturbed grazing patterns. Livestock attacked by large swarms often stop feeding and moving to seek relief, leading to significant losses in farm revenue during the peak biting season.

Effective management strategies must focus on both the aquatic larval habitat and the protection of livestock. Recommended control measures include:
