Description
Systematic position. The black grass aphid (Sipha maydis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. This insect is a specialized pest primarily found in regions with warm or temperate climates, often reaching outbreak levels during dry spring conditions.
Host plants. The aphid primarily infests various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, oats, and maize. In addition to agricultural crops, it utilizes various wild grasses as secondary hosts, which play a significant role in maintaining the population during off-season periods.
Biology and life cycle. This species reproduces through parthenogenesis, allowing for a rapid population increase within a short timeframe. The life cycle involves both apterous (wingless) and alate (winged) forms, with the latter enabling efficient migration between fields. Survival during winter is primarily achieved through the egg stage laid on crop debris or perennial grasses.
Damage and economic impact. The aphids form dense colonies on the underside of leaves. Feeding activity leads to the extraction of cell sap, causing chlorosis, leaf reddening, and necrosis. Chemical control using selective insecticides is necessary when aphid densities exceed defined economic thresholds to prevent severe crop damage.
