The sponge fly (Sisyra fuscata) belongs to the order Neuroptera and the family Sisyridae. Unlike common agricultural pests, this species is semi-aquatic, and its life cycle is intricately linked to the health of freshwater ecosystems and the presence of freshwater sponges.

Adult sponge flies are small insects with mottled brown coloration and lace-like wings that are characteristic of the Neuroptera order. They are frequently observed on vegetation near ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams, where they seek shelter and resting sites.

The biology of Sisyra fuscata is specialized: the larvae are entirely aquatic. After the female deposits eggs on leaves hanging over the water, the newly hatched larvae drop into the water, where they locate freshwater sponges (Spongillidae). They use elongated, needle-like mouthparts to pierce the sponge and consume its internal tissues.

While sponge flies are not primary pests of major field crops, they can be a concern for nursery growers or those managing vegetation in aquatic or wetland areas. Their damage is primarily focused on the depletion of local sponge colonies, which serve as water filters, and the occasional feeding of adults on tender plant tissues.
