Cambrian midge

Systematic position. The Cambrian midge (Sitodiplosis cambriensis) belongs to the order Diptera, family Cecidomyiidae. It is a specialized insect pest known for its cryptic lifestyle, which often complicates early detection in agricultural fields until significant damage has already occurred.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this species are cereal crops, with a clear preference for various wheat varieties (Triticum spp.). It typically attacks the inflorescences, and its population dynamics are closely linked to the developmental stage of the host plant during the heading and grain filling phases.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the wheat heads. Upon hatching, the larvae migrate to the grain to feed. As they mature, the larvae enter a period of dormancy, usually overwintering in the soil within the host crop residues or nearby topsoil, emerging as adults in the following spring once specific environmental cues are met.

Damage and harmfulness. The larvae are the main destructive stage. They feed on the developing kernels, which prevents proper grain development. This leads to shriveled, deformed, or entirely aborted grains, commonly known as «blighted ears». Severe infestations cause significant yield losses and reduce the overall quality and hectoliter weight of the harvested crop.

Control measures. Effective management depends on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies:

• Crop rotation to reduce the build-up of local populations in soil.
• Deep plowing of infested fields after harvest to bury and destroy overwintering larvae.
• Cultivating wheat varieties that are less susceptible to egg-laying or have tighter glumes.
• Monitoring adult flight activity to time the application of contact or systemic insecticides accurately when necessary.
