Description
Systematic position. The orange wheat blossom midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in regions with intensive wheat production, capable of causing substantial economic losses.
Host crops. This pest primarily attacks wheat (both winter and spring varieties). While it may occasionally be found on other cereals like barley or rye, wheat remains its preferred host, as the midge's life cycle is evolutionarily synchronized with the heading and flowering stages of wheat.
Biology and life cycle. Adult midges are small, orange-colored flies. They emerge during the late spring and early summer to mate and lay eggs within the developing wheat ears. After hatching, the larvae move into the florets and begin feeding on the developing kernels. By late summer, they drop to the soil, where they overwinter in cocoons, sometimes remaining in a state of diapause for multiple years.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. The larvae feed on the sap of the developing grain, which causes the kernels to become shrivelled, distorted, or completely empty. Heavy infestations result in significant yield reductions and lower grain quality, which can adversely affect milling properties and protein content.
Protection measures. Management strategies for the orange wheat blossom midge include:
- Crop rotation to reduce pest population density.
- Deep cultivation or plowing to bury the overwintering larvae in the soil.
- Use of resistant wheat cultivars that flower outside the peak emergence period of the midge.
