Biology and life cycle are unique because the entire development occurs within a single grain kernel. The female bores a small hole, deposits an egg, and seals it with a gelatinous secretion. The larvae hatch and consume the interior of the grain, creating a hidden infestation that often goes unnoticed until the adult beetles emerge, causing significant economic losses.

Nature of damage and harmfulness involve the internal destruction of the grain, resulting in weight loss and a reduction in nutritional value. Infested grain often experiences heating and moisture increases, which facilitates the growth of molds and bacteria. This, in turn, renders the grain unsuitable for human consumption or animal feed and destroys its germination potential.
