The tamarind weevil (Sitophilus linearis) is a coleopteran insect belonging to the family Curculionidae. It is a well-known stored-product pest that primarily infests the dried pods of the tamarind tree, causing substantial economic losses in the tropical agriculture sector.
The insect predominantly affects Tamarindus indica. While it is highly specialized, it can be found wherever tamarind fruits are stored, processed, or transported, making it a significant challenge for importers and distributors of tropical produce.
The biology of Sitophilus linearis follows a complete metamorphosis. The adult weevil bores into the pod to deposit eggs. The developing larvae feed exclusively inside the seeds or the pod pulp. This internal development makes detection difficult in the early stages of infestation.
The damage is characterized by the presence of small, circular exit holes made by adults and hollowed-out seeds. As the larvae consume the internal tissues, the nutritional value and marketability of the tamarind pods drop to zero, often leading to total inventory loss if left unchecked.
Control measures rely heavily on integrated pest management (IPM) practices within warehouses. Key strategies include:
- Regular inspection of incoming stock for signs of infestation.
- Utilization of cold storage to retard the development cycle.
- Strict sanitation protocols in storage facilities to eliminate breeding sites.
