Maize weevil

Sitophilus zeamais

Description

Systematic position: The maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a highly destructive pest of stored cereals, structurally similar to the rice weevil but physically larger and more capable of active flight, which allows it to infest crops even before harvest in tropical or warm temperate climates.

Crops damaged: This species is a primary pest of maize, rice, and sorghum. It also successfully attacks wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In addition to raw grain, the maize weevil can damage processed grain products, including flour, pasta, and birdseed, causing significant economic losses in storage facilities worldwide.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle is entirely dependent on the grain kernel. Adult females drill a small cavity in the grain, deposit an egg, and seal it with a gelatinous plug. The larva hatches, tunnels into the endosperm, and feeds until pupation occurs within the kernel. The total development period is typically 4–6 weeks, depending on the temperature and moisture content of the grain environment.

Character of damage and harmfulness: The larval stage causes the most severe damage by consuming the interior of the grain. Infested kernels are hollowed out, leading to significant weight loss and decreased nutritional value. Furthermore, the metabolic activity of these weevils generates heat and moisture in the grain bulk, which significantly promotes the development of grain-rotting fungi and other secondary storage pests.

Protection measures: Effective management of Sitophilus zeamais relies on sanitation and controlled storage environments. Key strategies include:

  • Drying the grain to a moisture content below 13% to inhibit reproduction.
  • Thoroughly cleaning storage bins to remove residual grain and debris.
  • Applying professional fumigation techniques with phosphine or other authorized gases.
  • Utilizing physical methods like cooling the grain via aeration to keep temperatures below 15°C.
