The Golden globular springtail (Sminthurinus aureus) is a small arthropod belonging to the order Collembola and the family Katiannidae. While often overlooked due to their microscopic size, these pests are known to reside in moist environments, particularly in greenhouses and fields with high organic matter content, where they can reach population levels sufficient to damage agricultural crops.

This pest affects a wide range of plants, primarily targeting seedlings and young, succulent foliage. The Sminthurinus aureus is particularly problematic for horticultural crops and ornamentals. They thrive in damp conditions, making high-humidity growing environments, such as commercial greenhouses, ideal habitats for their colonization.

The biology of these springtails is characterized by ametabolous development, meaning they do not undergo a larval stage. They grow through multiple molts throughout their adult life. These insects are sensitive to desiccation and prefer microhabitats with stable, high moisture levels, which dictates their spatial distribution within the crop canopy or the top layer of the soil.

The feeding damage caused by Sminthurinus aureus is distinct. They scrape the epidermis of leaves and stems, creating small, irregular holes or pitted areas. Under severe infestation, the cumulative damage can lead to stunted growth, wilting, and in extreme cases, the total loss of young seedlings. Their presence can also correlate with the secondary spread of fungal pathogens.
