Hispaniolan solenodon

The Hispaniolan solenodon (Solenodon paradoxus) is a specialized insectivorous mammal belonging to the order Eulipotyphla. Historically recognized as an evolutionary relic, this nocturnal creature possesses unique physiological traits, including a venomous bite used for subduing prey, which makes it a subject of high biological interest rather than a typical agricultural pest.

The species causes indirect damage to crops by excavating the topsoil to locate invertebrate prey. While it does not consume plant matter, its foraging behavior involves vigorous digging, which can uproot seedlings, damage sensitive root systems, and displace soil around tuber crops, leading to increased risk of plant desiccation.

Regarding its biology, the solenodon has a very slow reproductive rate, with offspring born in protected dens. Their foraging cycle is nocturnal, allowing them to remain undetected in fields for long periods. They rely heavily on their tactile sensitivity to hunt beetles, crickets, and soil-dwelling larvae, which are often the primary consumers of decomposing organic matter in the soil.

The harmfulness of this species is measured by the disruption of soil structure and the predation of beneficial soil macrofauna. By consuming earthworms and predatory insects that aerate the soil, solenodons can indirectly lead to compacted or less productive growing environments, making them a minor but notable nuisance for localized garden and field production.

Protection measures must be non-lethal, as Solenodon paradoxus is an endangered species protected by international agreements. The most effective strategies involve the installation of physical fences, deep-buried netting to prevent tunneling, and the use of sonic deterrents. Chemical controls are strictly prohibited and counterproductive to maintaining a healthy, balanced agricultural ecosystem.
