Description

Systematic position: Shrews (genus Sorex) belong to the order Eulipotyphla, family Soricidae. Although they resemble rodents in appearance, they are primarily insectivores. In an agricultural context, they are often considered pests not because they consume crops, but because their burrowing activity disrupts the soil structure and damages the root systems of cultivated plants.

Crops affected: The shrew does not feed on plant tissues directly; however, it causes significant mechanical damage to vegetable crops, root vegetables, and young nursery stock. Gardens containing carrots, beets, and potatoes, as well as lawn areas, are particularly prone to damage when shrews construct extensive underground tunnel networks.

Biology and life cycle: Shrews possess an exceptionally high metabolic rate, requiring them to forage constantly. They breed throughout the warmer months, with females typically producing several litters per season. They prefer moist, loose soil rich in organic matter, which provides both a food source in the form of insects and an easy environment for tunneling.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The primary harm is caused by the disturbance of the soil architecture. By digging tunnels, shrews undermine the root systems of seedlings and young plants, leading to desiccation and growth stagnation. Furthermore, their subterranean activity can cause localized soil collapse, making root systems vulnerable to drying out and increasing the risk of plant loss.

Control measures: Effective management of shrews focuses on deterrents rather than lethal force, as they also consume harmful garden insects:

  • Utilizing ultrasonic vibration devices to deter them from sensitive garden areas.
  • Planting repellent species such as garlic, onions, or fritillaria to discourage their presence.
  • Installing underground metal mesh barriers to prevent tunnel expansion into vegetable patches.
  • Reducing excessive mulch cover that provides excessive shelter and moisture for shrew activity.
