Sorhagenia is a genus of small moths belonging to the family Agonoxenidae (or Cosmopterigidae), within the order Lepidoptera. These insects are known in agricultural and botanical circles as specialized pests that primarily target plants within the Rhamnaceae family, specifically species of buckthorn (Rhamnus).
The host plants for this genus are almost exclusively buckthorn species. The larvae feed on the buds, foliage, and young shoots of these shrubs. While they are not considered major agricultural pests in commercial field crops, they can cause significant aesthetic and developmental damage in nurseries, botanical gardens, and ornamental hedges.
The biology of Sorhagenia involves a standard holometabolous development process: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are nocturnal, and their eggs are typically laid on the buds or young leaves. Once hatched, the larvae immediately begin constructing silk-bound shelters, which protect them from predators and environmental factors while they consume the plant tissue.
The primary damage caused by Sorhagenia includes leaf mining, skeletonization, and the destruction of developing buds. The larvae create characteristic webbing, drawing leaf edges together to form a protected nest. This feeding behavior restricts plant growth, leads to premature defoliation, and weakens the overall structure of the buckthorn bush, making it more susceptible to pathogens.
Pest management for Sorhagenia focuses on early detection and physical intervention. Cultural practices, such as the pruning and burning of infested shoots during the dormant season, can significantly reduce the overwintering population.
