The W-marked dart (Latin: Spaelotis clandestina) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. Widely distributed across temperate regions, this moth species is known for its ability to damage a diverse range of host plants, causing economic losses in field crops, vegetable gardens, and ornamental nurseries.

The larvae, commonly referred to as cutworms, feed on a wide variety of plants including cereals, corn, grasses, and various vegetables. These larvae are nocturnal feeders, meaning they spend the daylight hours buried in the topsoil or hidden under debris near the base of the host plants, which makes detection of an infestation challenging for farmers and agronomists.

The biological cycle of Spaelotis clandestina involves a single generation per year. The insect overwinter as partially grown larvae within the soil profile. As spring temperatures rise, these larvae emerge from their overwintering sites to resume feeding on germinating seedlings, often causing severe thinning of crop stands during the early stages of vegetation.

The damage caused by the W-marked dart can be devastating, as larvae may feed on leaves or sever the stems of young plants at ground level. This damage is particularly critical during the seedling establishment phase. If population densities are high, large patches of a field can be decimated, necessitating replanting or intensive pest control measures to mitigate losses.
