Spanolepis selloanae is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. This pest is known for its narrow dietary specialization, limited to specific plant species within certain climatic zones, primarily concentrated in South American regions.

The main crops susceptible to infestation by this species are members of the Poaceae family, including fodder grasses and specific ornamental plants. The larvae are most frequently found infesting Cortaderia selloana (Pampas grass), where the pest can cause significant damage to the leaf structure and reproductive organs.

The biology of Spanolepis selloanae is closely linked to the phenological stages of the host plant. The complete life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit their eggs on the underside of leaves or within leaf axils, providing emerging larvae with immediate access to nutrition.

The damage character manifests as skeletonization of leaf blades and the boring of deep galleries within stem tissues, which severely disrupts the plant's metabolic processes.
