Spathosternum

Spathosternum is a genus of grasshoppers belonging to the family Acrididae. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests, particularly in regions where rice and other cereal crops are the staple production. Their ability to thrive in diverse environments makes them a persistent challenge for farmers in tropical and subtropical regions.

Systematically, the genus falls under the order Orthoptera, suborder Caelifera. The most notable species, Spathosternum prasiniferum, is well-documented for its widespread presence in Asian agricultural systems, where it competes with other grasshopper species for food resources within fields and surrounding vegetation.

The primary damage caused by Spathosternum involves the consumption of green foliage. Both nymphs and adults feed on the leaves of rice, sorghum, wheat, and maize, creating ragged edges and large holes. This feeding behavior reduces the plant's photosynthetic efficiency and can significantly stunt growth, leading to yield loss if the infestation occurs during the vegetative stage.

The biology of Spathosternum is characterized by simple metamorphosis. Females deposit egg pods in the soil, which serve as a reservoir for the next generation. Nymphs undergo several instars, feeding voraciously throughout the process. The duration of each developmental stage is highly dependent on ambient temperature and rainfall patterns, which determine the seasonal abundance of the pest.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the recommended approach for controlling this pest. Strategies include cultural practices like deep plowing to disturb egg beds, removing host weeds that provide shelter, and using trap crops. When infestations cross economic thresholds, targeted applications of insecticides are necessary to prevent widespread damage to the main crop.
