Sphenella is a genus of tephritid fruit flies belonging to the family Tephritidae. These insects are known as specialized pests that primarily target plants within the Asteraceae family. While they are sometimes researched for their potential role in biological weed control, their presence in agricultural systems can lead to significant economic damage to susceptible flowering crops.

The biology and life cycle of the Sphenella genus are strictly synchronized with the flowering phenology of their host plants. Adult flies deposit eggs directly into the flower heads or buds. Once the larvae hatch, they penetrate the interior tissues of the inflorescence, where they feed on developing seeds and the receptacle. After passing through several larval instars, pupation typically occurs inside the damaged flower head or within the soil, depending on the species and environmental conditions.

By consuming the developing seeds within the capitulum, the larvae render the plant unable to reproduce effectively.
