Systematic position: The maize billbug (Sphenophorus incurrens) is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly known for its impact on maize production in specific geographic regions where climate conditions favor its life cycle.
Crops and damage: The primary host plant is corn (Zea mays). Adult beetles damage the plant by feeding on the foliage and, more destructively, by boring into the base of the stems. This feeding behavior disrupts the nutrient flow, often leading to stunted growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the complete collapse of the plant.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited into the stem tissue of the host plant. The larvae hatch and burrow internally, feeding on the pith. The pupal stage also takes place within the stem, and the new adults emerge to continue the cycle.
Economic impact: Damage is most severe during the early stages of corn development. When larvae infest the stems, the structural integrity of the plant is compromised, making it susceptible to lodging during high winds. This results in significant yield reduction, as damaged plants fail to produce normal ears or die before maturity.
