Description
Sphenophorus levis is a destructive agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is widely recognized as one of the most critical pests affecting commercial sugarcane production, particularly in South American agricultural landscapes.
The primary host for this species is sugarcane. The larvae target the underground portion of the plant and the base of the stems. By feeding on the internal tissues, they destroy the plant's vascular system, which significantly reduces the quality and quantity of the harvest, often necessitating early field renovation.
The life cycle of the insect consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult weevils are typically found at the soil surface, while females oviposit into the basal tissues of the sugarcane stalks. The larvae remain inside the stalks, where they complete their development, often remaining protected from external environmental factors.
Key symptoms of infestation include the yellowing and wilting of the central leaves, commonly referred to as "dead heart." Furthermore, the destruction of the root system and stem base leads to lodging and extreme plant fragility. Heavy infestations can result in total loss of stand uniformity and significantly reduced sugar yields.
Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This involves regular field monitoring, the use of systemic insecticides during peak infestation periods, and the implementation of cultural practices like crop rotation and the use of resistant varieties. Biological control using entomopathogenic fungi is also a critical component of modern sustainable strategies.
