Sphenophorus nebulosus is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Often referred to as a billbug, this pest is known for its cryptic behavior, as it typically feeds inside the stems of host plants, making it a difficult target for conventional surface-level pest management.

The primary hosts for this insect include various grass species, with a particular affinity for cereals such as wheat and corn. By boring into the stalks, the larvae disrupt the plant's vascular system, which hinders the transportation of nutrients and water, ultimately stunting growth and potentially killing the affected tillers.

The life cycle of Sphenophorus nebulosus involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult beetles emerge from overwintering sites in the soil or crop debris during the spring. Females lay their eggs near the base of the plant. The larvae then tunnel into the stem, completing their development within the plant tissue before pupating and emerging as the next generation of adults.
