Taxonomic classification. The genus Sphenorhina belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cercopidae, commonly referred to as spittlebugs or froghoppers. These insects are significant agricultural pests in tropical and subtropical regions, known for their distinctive ability to create protective foamy masses during their nymphal stages.

Host plants. The pest has a broad host range, primarily targeting monocotyledonous plants. Key crops susceptible to Sphenorhina infestation include sugarcane, maize, and various pasture grasses. In some regions, they have also been observed feeding on decorative garden shrubs and woody plants, where they can cause noticeable decline in plant health.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Sphenorhina is characterized by the nymphal stage's production of a frothy substance. This secretion protects the immature insects from desiccation and predators while they feed on the host's xylem sap. Adults are highly mobile and capable of spreading rapidly across fields during favorable weather conditions, usually triggered by increased humidity and temperature.

Nature of damage and economic importance. Both adults and nymphs feed by piercing the plant tissues and extracting xylem sap. This mechanical damage, combined with the injection of toxins, results in wilting, chlorosis, and stunted growth. Severe infestations often lead to significant reductions in biomass and yield, while the weakened plants become highly susceptible to secondary viral and fungal infections.

Protection measures. Managing Sphenorhina requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Essential steps include:
