Northern puffer

The northern puffer (lat. Sphoeroides maculatus) is a fish species belonging to the order Tetraodontiformes and the family Tetraodontidae. While primarily a wild marine inhabitant of the Western Atlantic, it is considered a pest in the context of commercial shellfisheries and aquaculture due to its predatory behavior and destructive interaction with infrastructure.

This species poses a significant threat to aquaculture industries by preying on commercially valuable invertebrates, including oysters, mussels, and various small crustaceans. Their feeding habits can lead to substantial reductions in stock density within aquaculture sites, directly impacting the profitability and sustainability of shellfish farming operations.

The biological development and life cycle of the northern puffer are adapted to coastal benthic environments. During the spawning season, they produce eggs that adhere to substrates, ensuring a high survival rate for the offspring. The juveniles are highly opportunistic feeders, allowing them to rapidly occupy and dominate areas with abundant food sources, which makes them difficult to manage in localized farming environments.

The damage caused by Sphoeroides maculatus is twofold: direct consumption of cultured shellfish and mechanical destruction of equipment. With their exceptionally strong, beak-like jaws, these fish easily bite through nylon netting, PVC pipes, and other gear. This physical damage leads to stock losses and requires high maintenance costs for equipment replacement and repair.

Effective management and control measures include:

• Utilizing reinforced, bite-resistant mesh and materials for aquaculture cages.
• Installing physical exclusionary barriers to prevent fish access to cultivation areas.
• Implementing targeted fishing programs to reduce local population density.
