Description

Systematic position: The lawn caterpillar (Spodoptera cilium) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Noctuidae. It is a significant pest known for its migratory behavior and ability to adapt to various climates within tropical and subtropical agricultural zones.

Host crops: This insect primarily targets grasses (Poaceae). It causes severe economic damage to crops such as rice, maize, wheat, millet, and sorghum. It also thrives on various wild grasses and turf, making it a problematic pest in both field crops and pasture management.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in masses on the underside of leaves. The larval stage consists of 5–6 instars. Larvae are nocturnal feeders, remaining hidden in soil crevices or plant bases during the day, which complicates early detection.

Nature of damage: Early larval instars feed on the leaf epidermis, causing transparent spots. As larvae grow, they consume entire leaf blades, leaving only central veins or causing total defoliation. High infestations can result in complete crop failure, especially during the early vegetative stages of plant growth.
