Fall armyworm

The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a highly destructive agricultural pest native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, which has recently invaded other continents. The adult moth is known for its strong migratory capability, allowing it to colonize new areas rapidly.

This pest is a major threat to global food security due to its polyphagous nature, feeding on more than 350 plant species. While it shows a strong preference for maize, it also causes severe economic losses in sorghum, rice, cotton, and various vegetable crops. High infestations can result in total crop failure if left unmanaged during the early growth stages.

The biological development of the fall armyworm includes the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The duration of the life cycle varies depending on environmental temperatures, generally ranging from 24 to 40 days. Females deposit hundreds of eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The larval stage, which consists of six instars, is responsible for all the crop damage observed in the field.

Damage symptoms usually begin as skeletonized leaves, where larvae consume the leaf tissue but leave the veins intact. As the larvae mature, they consume larger portions of the plant, often boring into the central whorl of maize or attacking the developing ears. This feeding behavior severely impacts the plant's photosynthetic capacity and physiological growth, leading to significant yield reduction.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Strategies should be combined for maximum effectiveness:

• Monitoring moth populations with pheromone traps.
• Scouting fields regularly to detect egg masses and young larvae.
• Utilizing biological controls, such as parasitoids (e.g., Cotesia spp.).
• Applying selective insecticides that have minimal impact on beneficial insects.
• Adopting good agronomic practices to promote healthy plant growth.
