Description
The tropical armyworm (Spodoptera litura) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a highly destructive polyphagous pest recognized globally for its ability to cause severe economic losses in various agricultural settings due to its high reproductive potential.
This pest affects a vast array of host plants, including soybeans, cotton, tobacco, peanuts, and many vegetable crops such as tomatoes and brassicas. Because of its wide host range, it is considered a significant threat to global food security in subtropical and tropical regions.
The biological development of the tropical armyworm consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Under optimal conditions, the life cycle is completed rapidly. Eggs are laid in clusters on the underside of leaves, and young larvae often feed gregariously, which makes them highly visible during early infestation stages.
The larvae are responsible for the primary damage. Early instars perform skeletonization of the leaves, while later instars consume entire leaves, stems, and reproductive parts of the plants. Severe infestations can result in total defoliation and significant yield reduction, leading to complete crop failure.
