Description
Systematic position: Spodoptera mauritia is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is widely recognized as a serious pest in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, notorious for its rapid population outbreaks and ability to cause extensive crop damage in a very short timeframe.
Host plants: This pest primarily targets members of the Poaceae family (grasses). It is a significant threat to rice, wheat, maize, millet, and sugarcane. Additionally, it frequently feeds on various pasture grasses, making it a challenging pest to manage in areas where agricultural fields are adjacent to grasslands.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Eggs are laid in masses on the underside of leaves and covered with protective hairs. The larvae pass through several instars before pupating in the soil. The total life cycle duration is highly temperature-dependent, typically ranging from one month to six weeks.
Damage and pest significance: The larval stage is the most destructive. Newly hatched larvae feed on the epidermis, creating a skeletonized appearance. As they mature, they consume the entire leaf lamina, often leaving only the midrib. In severe infestations, Spodoptera mauritia can defoliate entire rice paddies, resulting in significant yield loss or total crop failure.
