Description

Stenodiplosis is a genus of insects belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges) within the order Diptera. These minute flies are recognized as significant agricultural pests globally, particularly known for their ability to infest and severely damage the reproductive organs of various cereal crops, most notably sorghum.

The most economically damaging species in this genus is Stenodiplosis sorghicola, commonly referred to as the sorghum midge. These insects primarily target the developing ovaries of the host plant, preventing the formation of healthy grains and causing substantial losses in both seed yield and quality across infested fields.

The biological cycle is synchronized with the flowering stage of the host crop. Adult females lay individual eggs into the spikelets during anthesis. The larvae hatch and feed internally on the developing grain, passing through three instars before pupating within the glumes. This internal development offers protection from many environmental stressors.

Symptoms of infestation are often not visible until the grain maturation stage, when the lack of kernel development becomes apparent. Infested spikelets typically remain flat and empty, known as "blasted" heads. Because the damage occurs internally, farmers often overlook early signs until a significant portion of the crop has already been compromised.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key tactics include using resistant hybrids, planting uniform crops to synchronize flowering and limit the duration of midge exposure, and strict crop residue management to destroy overwintering larvae. Insecticide applications are effective only if timed precisely with the peak adult flight period.
