The Panicum midge (Stenodiplosis panici) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the Cecidomyiidae family. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily targets proso millet (Panicum miliaceum) crops. Due to its cryptic nature, it often goes undetected until significant crop losses are observed during the harvesting stage.

This pest is specialized in feeding on the reproductive structures of the millet plant. The larvae invade the florets during the flowering stage, feeding directly on the developing ovary. This process prevents the formation of grain, leading to a condition known as floret sterility. As a result, the plant produces empty glumes instead of marketable grains.
