Sorghum midge

Stenodiplosis sorghicola

Description

The sorghum midge (Stenodiplosis sorghicola) is a member of the order Diptera, family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive insect pests of sorghum crops worldwide, capable of causing devastating yield losses if left unmanaged.

This pest is highly host-specific, primarily attacking cultivated sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and its wild relatives. The damage is exclusively caused by the larvae, which live and feed within the developing floral spikelets of the plant, preventing the fertilization and development of the grain.

The life cycle of the sorghum midge is perfectly synchronized with the flowering stage of the host plant. Female midges lay eggs inside the glumes of the sorghum flower. After hatching, the larvae consume the contents of the ovary, causing it to wither and die. The entire life cycle can be completed in as little as 14-16 days, allowing for multiple generations per growing season.

Damage is characterized by empty or 'blasted' heads that fail to produce grain. Because the external appearance of the panicle remains largely unchanged, the damage is often not noticed until harvest time, leading to significant economic losses for producers. Infested spikelets often show a papery, thin texture.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key practices include planting sorghum at the same time across a region to ensure uniform flowering and using resistant hybrid varieties. Chemical control involving insecticides is effective, but it must be timed precisely during the early flowering stage when adult midges are actively laying eggs.

  • Utilizing short-duration or early-maturing sorghum varieties.
  • Destroying volunteer sorghum plants and wild grasses.
  • Implementing deep tillage to bury crop residues where larvae hibernate.
  • Monitoring adult activity using yellow sticky traps or visual head inspections.
  • Applying systemic or contact insecticides during the flowering window.
