Description

The Arabian grasshopper (Stenohippus arabicus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. It is a known agricultural pest inhabiting arid and semi-arid regions, where its populations can escalate rapidly under favorable environmental conditions, causing significant stress to local agroecosystems.

This pest predominantly targets graminaceous crops, including wheat, barley, and various types of pasture grasses. It feeds aggressively on the foliage and stems of these plants, often causing substantial biomass loss, which directly impacts crop yield and reduces the nutritional value of grazing lands.

The biology of Stenohippus arabicus follows the standard life cycle of acridids: egg, nymph, and adult. Eggs are laid in the soil within protective egg pods, which allow the species to overwinter successfully. With the arrival of warmer temperatures, nymphs emerge and undergo several developmental stages, feeding voraciously throughout each instar phase.
