Stenomalina

Stenomalina is a genus of parasitic wasps belonging to the family Pteromalidae within the order Hymenoptera. While many pteromalids are known for their role in biological control, certain species within this group are recognized as pests that can disrupt the development of cereal crops by targeting beneficial insects or causing direct harm to plant tissues during their development cycle.

This pest predominantly affects cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and oats. The damage is often observed during the vegetative and reproductive stages of plant growth. By invading the stem tissues, the larvae of Stenomalina can cause structural damage, which interferes with the nutrient transport system, leading to withered stems and underdeveloped ears.

The life cycle of Stenomalina is highly synchronized with the growth of its host plants and the availability of primary insect hosts. The female wasp deposits eggs into the tissues of the plant or directly onto the host. The larvae develop rapidly in favorable temperatures, often completing multiple generations within a single cropping season, which increases the pressure on the crop during its most sensitive periods.

Symptoms of infestation often go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred. Common signs include premature yellowing of the foliage, stunted growth, and a noticeable reduction in grain fill. The economic impact is linked to both the loss in yield volume and the decline in quality, making the grain less suitable for commercial and milling purposes.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

• implementing crop rotation to disrupt the pest's cycle;
• destroying crop residues where larvae hibernate;
• applying selective insecticides when monitoring indicates that the population has reached economic thresholds.
