Stenonema interpunctatum

Stenonema interpunctatum is a species belonging to the order Ephemeroptera (mayflies), within the family Heptageniidae. While typically viewed as aquatic insects, their proximity to irrigation systems and agricultural lands makes them relevant to farm management, especially in regions with extensive canal networks.

The biology of the species is defined by an aquatic nymphal stage, which feeds on algae and detritus, and a terrestrial winged adult stage. Adults are famous for their extremely short lifespan, during which they focus solely on reproduction, often forming large swarms near their aquatic breeding grounds.

In an agricultural context, Stenonema interpunctatum is rarely a direct consumer of crops. However, they can act as indicators of water quality. Excessive presence or sudden die-offs can lead to the clogging of irrigation filters and water intake equipment, which poses a significant nuisance for irrigation-dependent farms.

The economic damage is usually indirect, related to the maintenance of drainage and irrigation infrastructure. In rare instances, mass emergence events can disrupt field operations or contaminate sensitive harvestable products if the fields are situated immediately adjacent to stagnant or slow-moving water sources.
