Tracheal mite

Sternostoma tracheacolum is an endoparasitic mite that represents a significant pest in the field of avian health rather than plant pathology. It belongs to the order Mesostigmata and the family Rhinonyssidae, which are highly specialized mites that infest the respiratory tracts of various avian species, particularly cage birds like canaries and finches.

Despite being labeled a pest, this mite does not impact agricultural crops. Its economic and biological relevance is confined to bird breeding and conservation. It poses a major threat to bird collections, causing respiratory distress and mortality, which necessitates specific veterinary management techniques within avian facilities.

The life cycle of the mite is completed entirely within the respiratory passages of the host. Females are viviparous, depositing larvae directly into the trachea. The development from larva to adult is rapid, occurring within about a week. This short generation time allows for explosive population growth, which can quickly occlude the trachea and obstruct normal airflow.

The damage caused by Sternostoma tracheacolum is mechanical and nutritional. The mites pierce the mucosal lining of the trachea and air sacs to feed on blood and lymph. This leads to severe inflammation, mucus accumulation, and classic clinical signs: persistent wheezing, open-mouth breathing, neck stretching, and general lethargy, often resulting in death if untreated.

Control measures require a multi-faceted approach centered on veterinary intervention. Effective management includes:

• Treatment of infested birds with systemic acaricides administered via spot-on or water supply.
• Implementation of strict quarantine protocols for any newly acquired birds to prevent introduction.
• Rigorous cleaning and disinfection of aviaries and cages to eliminate any mites that might survive temporarily in the environment.
• Maintaining optimal bird hygiene to support immune system resilience against secondary infections.
