Systematic position: The common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus) belongs to the order Testudines and the family Kinosternidae. While often kept as pets, these turtles act as opportunistic pests in agricultural aquatic environments, causing significant damage to cultivation areas in ponds and managed wetlands.

Crops affected: This pest primarily threatens aquatic and semi-aquatic crops, including water hyacinths, water lilies, lotuses, and rice paddies. The turtles target young shoots, leaves, and roots, disrupting the growth cycle of essential vegetation and causing significant biomass loss in controlled agricultural water systems.

Biology and life cycle: Sternotherus odoratus is a highly adaptable, omnivorous species that thrives in stagnant or slow-moving water. Its life cycle involves laying eggs in moist soil near the water's edge, allowing for rapid population growth in areas with dense vegetation or debris, which makes them difficult to eradicate once established.

Damage and harmfulness: The turtle’s foraging behavior causes mechanical destruction of plant tissues by biting and uprooting aquatic flora. Furthermore, their movement on the pond bottom stirs up silt, leading to increased turbidity and burial of small plants. This environmental alteration reduces photosynthetic efficiency and leads to the decline of aquatic crop productivity.

Protection measures: Management strategies include installing high-tensile mesh fencing around the perimeter of aquatic fields to block access.
