Stethophyma

Stethophyma is a genus of grasshoppers belonging to the family Acrididae within the order Orthoptera. These insects are typically associated with damp habitats, marshes, and wetland margins. While often viewed as part of the natural ecosystem, they can become significant agricultural pests when their population densities increase in areas adjacent to cultivated land.

The primary hosts for Stethophyma include various cereals, grasses, and sedges. Their feeding habits target the green vegetative parts of these plants. In agricultural settings, they can cause substantial damage to grasslands, pastures, and cereal crops, particularly those planted in low-lying, moist conditions that favor the grasshopper's lifecycle.

The biological cycle of Stethophyma consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs are deposited in the soil, protected by an egg pod, where they typically undergo diapause during winter. In spring, nymphs emerge and undergo several developmental instars, feeding voraciously on local vegetation before reaching the adult winged stage during the summer months.

By consuming leaf tissue, these pests reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the crops, leading to stunted growth and lower biomass yields.
