Systematic position: The genus Stratiomys belongs to the family Stratiomyidae, order Diptera. While many species are ecologically beneficial as decomposers, certain populations can become problematic in intensive agricultural systems where sanitation protocols are not strictly followed.

Crops and damage profile: These insects primarily affect vegetables, greenhouse crops, and seedlings. They are not typical primary pests; instead, they act as opportunistic scavengers. Damage occurs when larvae attack weakened roots or stems in overwatered or decaying soil, indirectly promoting plant wilting and secondary infections.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is holometabolous, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults are commonly found around flowering plants. The larvae, however, are aquatic or semi-aquatic and thrive in high-moisture organic-rich environments, making poorly managed greenhouses an ideal habitat for their mass development.

Agronomic importance: Their presence is often a symptom of poor soil hygiene. Larval feeding damages plant tissues, but the greater threat is the creation of a microclimate favorable for pathogens. By disturbing the root zone and introducing bacteria through feeding wounds, they contribute significantly to losses in nursery stock and vegetable production.

Protection measures: Effective management relies on cultural practices rather than direct chemical intervention:

• Implement strict moisture management to avoid waterlogged conditions.
• Remove all dead plant matter and refuse from the growing environment regularly.
• Ensure adequate greenhouse ventilation to reduce overall humidity levels.
• Use sterilized or well-composted organic matter to prevent introducing larvae into the soil.
