Description
The sunflower maggot (Strauzia longipennis) belongs to the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. While primarily a concern in North American sunflower production, it is recognized as a significant pest capable of reducing both yield and stand quality in susceptible crops.
This insect feeds primarily on the stems of sunflowers (Helianthus annuus). By tunneling into the central pith of the stem, the larvae disrupt the vascular tissue, which interferes with the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients effectively from the roots to the flowering head.
Regarding its biological cycle, the sunflower maggot overwinters as a pupa in the soil near the previous year's sunflower stalks. In the spring, adult flies emerge, mate, and deposit eggs into the stem tissue of young sunflower plants. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae move into the pith to feed and develop.
The damage caused by these maggots includes structural weakening of the plant stem, leading to increased susceptibility to lodging during high winds. Furthermore, the tunnels serve as entry points for bacterial and fungal pathogens, potentially causing stalk rot and further deteriorating the overall crop health.
Management strategies for this pest should focus on cultural and chemical control measures:
- Utilizing crop rotation to reduce the overwintering population density in the soil.
- Eliminating wild sunflowers in or near fields that act as secondary hosts.
- Implementing deep tillage after harvest to bury and destroy overwintering pupae.
- Applying systemic insecticides during the peak fly emergence period to prevent initial oviposition.
