Spruce cone fly
Strobilomyia anthracina
Description
The Strobilomyia anthracina is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Anthomyiidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive agents affecting the seed production of Norway spruce, significantly impacting forestry and reforestation projects by damaging the generative organs of the trees.
The primary damage is caused by the larval stage, which feeds exclusively inside the developing spruce cones. By consuming the seed scales and the seeds themselves, these larvae can destroy the majority of the cone's potential seed crop. This makes it an economically significant pest for commercial seed orchards and forest nursery managers.
The life cycle of this species is strictly synchronized with the flowering phenology of its host tree. Adults emerge in spring, typically coinciding with the pollination period of spruce. Eggs are deposited on the scales of young cones, and upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the cone tissue. They remain inside throughout the summer, eventually exiting the cone to pupate in the soil until the next season.
Infested cones typically exhibit signs of premature discoloration, wilting, and irregular growth. Upon dissection, internal galleries created by larvae are filled with frass, rendering the seeds useless. Because the damage occurs internally, it is often difficult to detect until it is too late to implement effective rescue treatments for the current season's yield.
Effective management strategies require a combination of preventative and corrective actions. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for this species includes:
- Application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight period to prevent oviposition.
- Removal and destruction of fallen or infested cones to break the life cycle of the insect.
- Monitoring the emergence of adults using pheromone or visual traps to time pesticide applications precisely.
- Selecting resistant or late-flowering spruce varieties to reduce the synchrony between the pest and its host.
